3 Common Questions about Brain Injuries
Request Free ConsultationMarch is Brain Injury Awareness Month. At Fuicelli & Lee, these injuries are very personal for our team. Our founding partner, Keith Fuicelli, suffered a life-threatening brain injury in 2007, and he spent the next two and a half years recovering. This perspective gives our firm first-hand knowledge of the serious issues associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the long road that lies ahead for victims.
In honor of Brain Injury Awareness Month, we’re going to answer some of the most common questions about TBI.
What are the most common causes of brain injuries?
Based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most common causes of brain injuries are:
- Falls (35.2%)
- Motor vehicle accidents (17.3%)
- Trauma from being hit by a foreign object (16.5%)
- Assaults (11%)
Mr. Fuicelli suffered his brain injury as part of a car accident. He was hit by a vehicle while he was crossing the street. This underscores the fact that vehicle accidents often result in brain injuries to individuals who are on foot or bicycle as well as in a car.
What is the long-term impact of a brain injury?
The long-term effects of a brain injury are different for everyone. The location and severity of your injury will play an important role in the long-term impact you experience. In cases of concussions and other mild brain injuries, a full recovery is often likely. However, more severe cases of traumatic brain injury can result in a wide range of long-term consequences, including:
- Depression
- Mood swings
- Cognitive issues, including difficulty learning new information or problems concentrating
- Balance issues
- Confusion
- Vision issues
- Difficulty with basic routine tasks such as eating, listening or talking
- Aggression or irritability
- Ringing in the ears
- Changes to senses of touch, smell or taste
In some instances, ongoing treatment can result in an improvement of these issues and potentially a full recovery, as in Mr. Fuicelli’s case. However, many traumatic brain injury victims struggle with these issues for the rest of their life.
Can I recover compensation after a brain injury?
If your brain injury was caused by the negligent actions of another, you may be able to recover compensation for:
- Current and future medical expenses
- Rehabilitation and ongoing care
- Lost wages
- Diminished earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
- Diminished quality of life
- Expenses associated with any home modifications required after your injury
