Motorcycle Safety Overview

Although riding a motorcycle provides a feeling of freedom that millions of people love, there are inherent risks involved in riding. Motorcyclists should do everything that they can to protect themselves from the millions of traffic accidents which occur every year in the United States, and which claim the lives of thousands of motorcyclists. Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmets are one excellent way to protect yourself, but of course not being in an accident is even better. If you or a loved one have been in a motorcycle crash, contact a Denver motorcycle accident lawyer to discuss your options.

Drivers and passengers in cars and trucks have safety features that motorcyclists and their passengers lack; from the inherent structure of the vehicle, to seatbelts and air bags, to anti-lock brakes and all-wheel drive, there are all kinds of features available on cars that are not on motorcycles. The most important safety features of a motorcycle are the rider’s helmet and riding leathers, his or her own skills and awareness of surroundings.

A great way to protect yourself from the dangers of motorcycling is to enroll in a motorcycle driver safety class. Classes are available for different skill levels, from beginners who have never been on a motorcycle before to advanced riders who already have good skills. The more knowledge you have about what to look for and how to be aware of your surroundings, and how to avoid potentially dangerous riding situations, the less likely you are to have to rely on your leather and your helmet to protect you. To look into a rider safety course, check with the Colorado Department of Transportation or you may be able to get a recommendation from motorcycle dealers or mechanics.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to riding a motorcycle is that, because you are more vulnerable to injury than you would be in a car, safety has to be a major consideration. Many studies have been done on the causes of those millions of annual traffic accidents as well, and one thing that seems to be a factor in a very large number of traffic accidents is speed. While most motorcyclists drive safely, given that the freedom and exhilaration of the ride are among the common reasons given for preferring motorcycles, certainly there are some riders who are prone to driving too fast. The speed limits on roads are there for a reason, and a good deal of thought and study is put into determining them. For your own safety, you should drive at safe speeds at all times.
