Colorado DOT Helmet Compliance

Many Coloradans choose to ride motorcycles instead of driving cars or trucks for many different reasons. One reason that is commonly cited is the sense of freedom and exhilaration that a motorcycle may give which riders may not feel when driving a car. Motorcycles typically get better gas mileage than cars, the biker image is attractive to many people, but in the end every motorcyclist has his or her own reason for the choice. Riding is Colorado means that, once you reach the age of eighteen, you are legally entitled to make your own choice about whether or not to wear a helmet while riding. Many people do in fact make this choice, and whatever the reasons for making it, it is important to remember that safety on a motorcycle is of the utmost importance. If you have been injured in a motorcycle crash, contact a Denver motorcycle accident lawyer to discuss your options.

Over the years, multiple independent studies have shown that wearing a helmet while riding significantly reduces the risk of and severity of head trauma during a motorcycle wreck. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administartion (NHTSA) compiled a report at the end of 2010 on Motorcycle Helmet Use, showing trends in motorcycle helmet use. The report seems to indicate a disheartening trend away from Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmet use by motorcyclists. This trend appears in two different forms. The percentage of riders going without helmets is going up, as is the percentage of riders wearing non-compliant helmets. Helmets that are not approved by the Department of Transportation may not provide the safety of a DOT approved helmet. Although DOT compliant helmets have DOT stickers on the back, there are also counterfeit stickers out there, so it is good to be able to recognize what effective helmets look like. The simplest thing to look for is at least an inch of padding, and coverage of the ears. Any helmet that does not offer both of these things is not DOT-approved.

The disturbing thing about this trend is that, aside from the fact that it shows people ignoring the studies that show how vital helmets can be, it also shows that people are using helmets that may not protect them, and in some cases people may not realize that they are not being protected. If you are in a crash while wearing a non-compliant helmet, it will not protect your head as effectively, and you may need a Denver motorcycle crash attorney to protect your legal rights.
