Understanding Denver Road Rash Injuries

Denver road rash injuries can be devastating | Fuicelli and LeeRoad rash injuries are painful abrasions and bruises that happen when motorcycle riders are dragged or thrown from their bikes during an accident. Symptoms can include pain and heavy bleeding. The term road rash can apply to both the fresh injury and the resulting scar left after it heals.

Many times, during a motorcycle accident, riders can be thrown from their bikes. When skin comes into contact with a road surface such as pavement or gravel, the resulting injuries, or “rash,” can be very serious. Often, these injuries require emergency care and hospitalization, which could result in surgeries and a long and expensive recovery. Working with a competent attorney experienced with Denver road rash injuries, can make all the difference in your outcome.

Types of Road Rash Injuries

  • Cuts and Scrapes Requiring Stitches– These are open wounds caused by road surfaces grating against skin, often at high speeds. These require stitches to close the wound and facilitate healing. Infection is a huge risk with these types of injuries.
  • Compression Injuries– When an arm or leg becomes wedged between the bike and the road, these crushing or bruising injuries are a common result.
  • Avulsion Injuries- The most serious type of road rash, these wounds are deep scrapes where all layers of skin are stripped away leaving severe scarring. In a full-thickness wound, muscle and fat may be visible. These injuries usually necessitate skin grafts.

Road rash injuries caused by motorcycle accidents can cause tremendous pain, leave permanent scarring, and require on-going medical care. Victims can also be left with mountains of medical bills and insurance hassles. However, riders can reduce the risks of road rash by wearing appropriate motorcycle personal protective equipment.

Motorcycle Personal Protective Equipment

Wearing the proper personal protective equipment while riding your motorcycle can eliminate certain injuries and greatly reduce the severity of others in the event of an accident.

The most important piece of protective equipment any rider can wear is a helmet. Additional protective clothing may include special kinds of jackets, gloves, boots, and pants. Jackets made for cyclists are typically constructed of leather or specialized nylon fabrics like cordura or Kevlar. Commonly, these jackets have heavy padding in the elbow, shoulder, and spine areas.

Gloves are usually made of leather or Kevlar, and a few may offer extra carbon fiber knuckle protection. Boots designed for sport riding normally include reinforcing plastic caps on the toe and ankle areas. Protective pants are typically leather, cordura, or Kevlar.

In the event of contact with the road surface during an accident, these special materials will take the damage from the friction instead of your skin. Thus, sparing a rider painful, disfiguring, debilitating, and potentially life-threatening injuries.
