A 16-year-old girl who slammed her car into an unoccupied mobile home in Aurora was trying a stunt-driving trick, according to CBS Denver. The girl, who does not have a driver’s license, was trying to do a J-turn, a move where the driver quickly pulls the emergency brake in order to make the car spin around. There were three other passengers in the car with her, all of whom were minors. One passenger, the driver’s 13-year-old brother was killed in the crash. The driver is in the hospital in critical condition, and the other two 16-year-old passengers were hurt as well. Aurora Police spokesman Lt. Chuck DeShazer said that the accident came from a young, inexperienced driver trying too hard to do something that was above her ability level, not realizing how dangerous a car can be when misused. The police hope that this tragedy will serve as a lesson to other young drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States, representing more than one third of all teenage fatality. They cite research which points to several of the leading causes of teenage traffic fatalities. Many of these causes ultimately come down to immaturity and inexperience, but direct causes are usually speed, drinking or drug use, not wearing seat belts, distracted driving, or drowsy driving. For many people, it takes a certain amount of time and maturity to begin to recognize their limits when it comes to driving. The NHTSA identifies three things that they believe could go a long way toward helping the problem: increased use of seat belts, graduated driver licensing, and reducing teen access to alcohol.
